People want to know – The most expensive wine in the world
Which is the most expensive wine in the world? People want to know, but they're afraid to ask. So they search on the Internet. There they ask the question that they would be too ashamed to ask a human being. They do this because they fear that they will reveal the lower sides of their personality. The question they ask is: What is the most expensive wine in the world? It's really a shame. It would be much nicer if the question was: What does the most expensive wine in the world taste like ? Or even, Why? Why is this wine so expensive? For some people, this question leads down a rabbit hole of conspiratorial analogies. Is the wine so expensive just because of its reputation? Is it just the name that pays here? Has availability been manipulated to create artificial scarcity? Aren't the expensive wines actually all fakes? Does someone want to deceive me?
The story of the hotel management student who asked the sommelier about the most expensive wines in the world and was given a task is illuminating. Since it was known that great red wine vinegars were available, he was asked to find a bottle of Château Petrus Vinaigre from the 1990 vintage. The apprentice searched and searched and when he found nothing, he started calling one wine merchant after another. Each time he was assured that Château Petrus does not make red wine vinegar. But sure, he thought, a bottle or even a barrel must go bad from time to time. In his imagination he saw the winemakers and estate managers of the legendary winery in Pomerol gathering for lunch, and as the salad is served, someone asks to pass the vinaigre , their eyes meet and a cheerful atmosphere ensues.
The top five most expensive white wines and red wines are not only characterized by the highest prices. Their eventful history and their rarity unite them beyond their price. In addition, all wines were sold at auctions. For collectors, purchasing them is more of an investment than immediate enjoyment. We will now show you the five most expensive drops.
By the way, a 0.75 liter bottle of Romanée-Conti from the 1945 vintage was sold as the most expensive wine in the world. In 2018, the bottle, which is now more than 75 years old, was auctioned at Sothebys in New York for 558,000 US dollars - the equivalent of 489,000 euros . The absolute specialty of the most expensive wine in the world? It comes from the most famous location in Burgundy and was, in a sense, the last of its kind. The vines in the vineyard were completely replanted in 1946. That's why there were no further wines from these exact vines! It is therefore a unique vinophile .
The bottle of wine in second place is a Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1992 vintage. The six liter bottle was auctioned in 2000 for an impressive 438,000 euros . Since this was a charity event , the question arises as to whether the auction proceeds correspond to the actual value of the bottle.
With a price of $310,700, the Château Mouton-Rothschild 1945 takes third place. The Château is a wine from the exceptional 1945 vintage. The label has a clear “V”. It stands for "Victory" and symbolizes the Allied victory in World War II.
Fourth place goes to Château Cheval Blanc 1947. Château Cheval Blanc is one of the best wineries on the right bank of Bordeaux. The quality of these wines is correspondingly high. The 1947 vintage is considered one of the best in the history of Bordeaux. At an auction in Geneva in 2010, a six-liter bottle was sold for the equivalent of 254,000 euros . There are only two other examples of the wine left in the world - so its value comes not only from its taste, but also from its rarity .
The Heidsieck champagne from 1907 comes in fifth place. This wine legend comes from the depths of the sea . In 1916, a Swedish cargo ship transported the champagne to the Russian Tsar Nicholas II. The ship was torpedoed by German submarines on the way and sank. The valuable cargo was discovered off the coast of Finland more than 80 years later. 2,000 bottles of high-quality wines and spirits were recovered from the shipwreck. In 1998, a Russian businessman paid 240,000 euros for a single bottle of the fine wine at an auction.
